Scott Hansen’s recent post about vintage speed boats called to mind the slightly less vintage 118 Wallypower from Monte Carlo boat builders Wally Yachts. The 118’s more expensive model (US$25 million give or take) is powered by three 5,600-horsepower gas turbines with two auxiliary diesel engines, and plunders its way through 58 litres (15 US gallons) of diesel per nautical mile at its cruising speed of 60 knots, giving it a range at this speed, from a full 22,000-litre (5,812-gallon) tank, of just 380 nautical miles.

The 118 is best known as the “Renovatio” designed by Ewan McGregor’s character in Michael Bay’s sci-fi chase film The Island. Here’s what British motoring show Top Gear thought of it: “If Darth Vader was a pirate, this would be his ship.”
