Illustrator and typographer Jessica Hische is in Auckland to speak at Semi-Permanent. She talked to 95bFM’s Charlotte Ryan about how and why she practises her craft.
Sebastiaan de With’s beautiful UI design for the doubleTwist app, running on Android. De With says he “sure as hell wasn’t going to use an entirely new platform … just to ape another”, however there’s surely a small debt of gratitude due here, particularly in the player interface itself, to Apple’s recent work on the QuickTime player. Regardless, I dig it.
The Rest — “Modern Time Travel (Necessities)”
I’m seriously liking The Rest at the moment. They’ve got a 4 track EP The Cried Wolf available for free which includes an awesome cover of Robyn’s With Every Heartbeat.

Ben Burtt talks about creating the sounds for the lightsabers in Star Wars. Sound design is a fascinating field, and sounds can come from some pretty random places. I always remember in War Of The Worlds how they made the sound of the martian space craft opening by twisting lid off a mayonnaise jar inside a toilet bowl.
