Following extensive testing, Joe Leech and Fiz Yazdi conclude that users do scroll beyond the fold in the vast majority of cases, and that cramming all of the content above this imaginary line might actually have the opposite effect:
The surprising thing we learnt was that actually having less above the fold (one large content block as opposed to 2 smaller ones) encouraged exploration below the fold.

Dmitry Baranovskiy’s cross-browser vector-drawing library, which began as a 20% time project while he was at Atlassian. Supports all modern browsers and IE6 upwards, and the demos are pretty sweet.
Raphaël uses the SVG W3C Recommendation and VML as a base for creating graphics. This means every graphical object you create is also a DOM object, so you can attach JavaScript event handlers or modify them later. Raphaël’s goal is to provide an adapter that will make drawing vector art compatible cross-browser and easy.
Mint’s Justin Maxwell describes a cross-browser solution for trimming long strings using pure CSS (and a Firefox binding). How did I not know about this? Already implemented in one project today.
