Freediver Guillaume Nery simulates a basejump underwater at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas. Fellow diver Julie Gautier filmed the footage, also on a single breath.

I missed posting this at the time: New Zealander William Trubridge won this year’s Suunto Dive-Off at the same location in late April. He dived to a world-record depth of 95 metres in the purest of the freediving disciplines, constant-weight with no fins. Full coverage is at Vertical Blue. (via Lee Majors)

Here’s a short I made with some friends as part of 48HOURS, a nationwide contest to write, shoot and edit a film of up to seven minutes duration in a single weekend. Each team draws one of ten random genres (we got “biopic”) and must include several other mandatory elements.

We shot mostly with a Canon 7D and I edited in Final Cut Express with Magic Bullet Mojo for basic colour grading. I’m really happy with how the flashback scenes turned out. That’s my very obliging nephew Oscar running around our backyard in a dress. Try as we might, we couldn’t convince him to wear a blond wig for the Goodbye Pork Pie scene however.

I’ve competed with a different team twice before, but not for five years. This time it was a smaller team of close friends and we had a ball, though not without a tense moment or two midway through day two. Thanks to Morgan and Catherine for organising the team and venue, and to several of the actors who pitched in on the Sunday to help us get the edit done before the 7pm deadline.

Would it be crass of me to mention there’s 10 iPhones up for grabs for the short with the most views come the end of the month? Probably. Go watch! (via Amanda Wood)

48Hours is a New Zealand-wide contest to write, shoot and edit a short film in a single weekend. Technical Difficulties from Team Zombies Rule — one of my favourites from the Auckland regional final — narrowly missed making it into this year’s national final. Each team draws a random genre and is assigned elements to include in the short: a character, object and line of dialogue. These guys drew “real time” as the genre and staged their zombie attack as a cleverly cut live news report. And yes, that is Sunday Breakfast’s hilarious José Barbosa as news anchor Rex.
