Oregon artist Carson Ellis earlier this month revealed her cover illustration for the first in husband (and Decemberists frontman) Colin Meloy’s forthcoming series of books for young people, entitled Wildwood. The book, “a classic tale of adventure, magic and danger, set in an alternate version of modern-day Portland” will be published by Harper Collins in September.

Stephen Coles:

More evidence that hand-lettering is in: not only is Jeff Bridges on the cover of Esquire UK, so is his typography. The frenetic brushwork is familiar to anyone who has visited Bridges’ website, which has almost no text or type at all. It’s all lettered, written, scribbled by hand.

I think the logo looks great. If they didn’t already have one of the best brands in the mag business, I’d keep it.

Yesterday I wrapped up work on Coming & Crying, the Kickstarter-powered first release from Melissa Gira Grant and Meaghan O’Connell’s Glass Houses Press. The perfect cover photograph is by Nikola Tamindzic, and I handled design duties inside and out.

Oh, also — Dolly is a hell of a typeface.
