Trailer for Wellington actor/director Taika Waititi’s new feature Boy, inspired by the characters from his Oscar-nominated short Two Cars, One Night. His Q+A appearance (in three parts) following the film’s Sundance screening is delightful.

Nearly forgot: the 33rd America’s Cup starts tonight in Valencia and will be decided by next weekend. No New Zealand boats are competing due to the change in race format, but there are at least half a dozen kiwis competing across both the US and Swiss crews. Might well be a yawnfest, but have a read of Alinghi’s tech specs:

Its canting mast is the equivalent height of a 17-storey building and withstands compression comparable to 50 SUVs balanced on a foundation the size of a tennis ball.

Not to be outdone, BMW Oracle’s trimaran has an optional wing sail that is more than twice the area of a Boeing 747’s wing, the largest of its type ever fitted to a racing yacht.

What a beautiful, heavenly place you live in, with a very fine maritime museum.

Pretty happy with how this turned out: my daughter and nephews enjoying the sunshine on our southern hemisphere Christmas Day. This is my first use of the video capability of the Nikon D300s, paired with a 50mm f/1.4 prime. With the aperture wide open the shutter speed was very fast, hence the staccato effect where individual water drops are visible rather than a stream from the hose. Soundtrack is by Belle & Sebastian.

“Blinded By The Lights (Nero Remix)” from The Streets’ album A Grand Don’t Come For Free. The first time I heard the original track played on 95bFM I was on a short helicopter ride over Auckland and now can only picture that vantage point when I hear it. Turn it up loud. (via Dupstep Friday)
